Lesson Overview

13.20 – Understanding Seasonal Depression: Seasonal depression, or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), appears when light changes disrupt the body’s natural rhythm. In darker months, reduced sunlight lowers serotonin and alters melatonin, causing fatigue and low mood. People may oversleep, crave carbs, and withdraw socially. The sadness can fade when spring returns, but it feels real and heavy during winter. Light therapy, outdoor walks, and vitamin D support can make a big difference. Keeping consistent sleep and activity patterns helps the body stay balanced even with less daylight. Recognizing this pattern each year allows for early prevention. Some people feel the opposite—“summer SAD”—where heat and overstimulation cause similar effects. The key is noticing how seasons affect your energy and planning supports around it. Light, movement, and connection act as counterweights to darkness. Understanding seasonal depression brings control back, reminding people that this cycle can be managed with awareness and preparation.
