29.1 – Understanding Fear as a Survival Response: Fear is one of the oldest and most important emotions humans have because it helps keep us safe. It alerts us to danger and prepares our body to react quickly. When we sense a threat, our heart rate increases, our breathing speeds up, and our muscles tense, ready to fight or run. This is known as the “fight, flight, or freeze” response. While fear can feel uncomfortable, it’s our body’s way of protecting us from harm. Sometimes, though, our brain can react to things that aren’t truly dangerous, creating unnecessary stress. Learning how fear works helps us separate real threats from imagined ones. When we understand this system, we can calm our body down more effectively. Recognizing fear as a survival tool, not a weakness, gives us power over it. By accepting it, we learn to respond instead of just react.
