4.3 – Why Regret Often Feels Like a Loop: Regret can play in our heads like a movie we can’t turn off. The mind keeps replaying moments, hoping to rewrite what’s already done. This loop happens because our brains want resolution, but regret rarely has a clean ending. The more we fight it, the louder it gets, feeding off our need to feel in control. It can steal focus from the present and trap us in “what if” thinking. To break the loop, we must accept that the past can’t change, but our understanding of it can. Breathing, journaling, or talking to someone can help interrupt the cycle. Regret repeats itself not to punish us but to seek meaning. When we offer that meaning through reflection, the loop begins to quiet down. Recognizing the loop is the first step toward peace with our past choices.
