Lesson Overview

13.18 – Depression and Physical Pain Symptoms: Depression doesn’t only hurt emotionally—it can cause real, measurable physical pain. People may experience headaches, back pain, muscle tension, or stomach issues with no clear medical cause. This happens because the brain’s pain and mood centers are deeply connected through shared chemical messengers. When mood chemicals are low, the body’s pain sensitivity increases. Sleep loss and constant stress also heighten tension, making aches worse. Many people visit doctors for pain only to learn it’s tied to depression, not injury. Understanding this link helps people take both physical and emotional symptoms seriously. Treating depression often reduces pain, showing how closely the body and mind work together. Gentle movement, stretching, therapy, and medication can all lessen discomfort. Listening to your body instead of ignoring it builds awareness of how emotions show up physically. When healing begins, the pain often fades with it, reminding us that relief is possible when both the mind and body are cared for as one.
