7.3 – How the Body Reacts During a Panic Surge: During panic, your body goes into high alert as if danger is right in front of you. Your heart pounds to pump blood faster, your breathing becomes quick and shallow, and muscles tighten to prepare for action. It’s called the “fight-flight-freeze” response, and it’s a leftover survival system from ancient times. The problem is, panic can turn this system on even when no threat exists. Knowing these reactions are normal can ease the fear that something is “wrong” with you. You’re not losing control—you’re experiencing your body’s safety system overreacting. Once you understand this, you can use calming techniques to signal that you’re safe. Slow breathing and gentle movement tell your body it’s okay to relax. Over time, your body learns to trust these signals again.
