Lesson Overview

13.8 – Depression and the Loss of Motivation: Depression often steals the drive to do things, even simple ones like showering or eating. It’s not because someone doesn’t care—it’s because the brain’s reward system isn’t working properly. The energy that once pushed you forward feels gone, replaced by exhaustion and hopelessness. Even when people want to change, the steps feel too heavy to take. This loss of motivation can make people feel guilty, which deepens the cycle. Breaking it starts with understanding that small wins count—brushing your teeth, getting out of bed, or answering a message can all be victories. Gradually, each small action reminds the brain that movement creates energy. Motivation doesn’t have to come first; sometimes it grows only after taking a tiny step. Support from others helps reignite the spark when self-drive fades. Recognizing that motivation loss is a symptom, not a choice, allows compassion to replace shame. Slowly, consistency brings back rhythm, and what once felt impossible begins to feel reachable again.
