Lesson Overview

13.12 – Recognizing Cognitive Distortions in Depression: Depression often twists thoughts into false truths that feel real. These thinking traps—like “I’m worthless” or “nothing will ever change”—make sadness heavier and hope harder to find. The brain becomes stuck in patterns that filter out positive experiences and focus only on the negative. Common distortions include all-or-nothing thinking, overgeneralizing, and blaming yourself for things beyond your control. Learning to recognize these patterns is like turning on a light in a dark room—you start to see that not every thought deserves belief. Writing them down, challenging them, or speaking with a therapist can help break their power. Over time, the mind learns to balance emotion with logic again. Replacing distorted thoughts with balanced ones doesn’t erase depression overnight, but it creates cracks where hope can shine through. Awareness of these distortions transforms them from invisible chains into visible habits that can be changed through care, repetition, and gentle practice.
