Lesson Overview

8.2 – The Difference Between Shame and Guilt: Shame and guilt often get mixed up, but they are very different emotions. Guilt says, “I did something wrong,” while shame says, “There is something wrong with me.” Guilt can help you make better choices and take responsibility, while shame makes you want to disappear. Guilt encourages growth, but shame traps you in self-blame. When you feel guilty, you might want to fix what happened; when you feel shame, you may believe you are beyond repair. Knowing the difference helps you separate your worth from your actions. Everyone makes mistakes, but mistakes don’t define your value. Learning to see guilt as a teacher and shame as a signal helps you grow with kindness instead of fear. With practice, you can move from punishing yourself to understanding yourself.
