36.26 – Why Forgiveness and Trust Are Different: Forgiveness and trust are often linked, but they are not the same thing. Forgiveness means releasing anger so you can move forward; trust means believing that someone is safe again. You can forgive without ever trusting that person again. Forgiveness is internal—it’s about your peace. Trust is relational—it’s about their behavior. Confusing the two can pressure you into unsafe situations before you’re ready. Forgiveness happens when you decide not to carry resentment, while trust rebuilds only when consistent actions earn it. One can happen without the other. Understanding this distinction protects you from guilt or self-blame for setting boundaries. Forgiving doesn’t mean forgetting or excusing; it means freeing yourself from the weight of pain. Trust, when it returns, grows slowly through repeated proof. Knowing this difference allows you to heal with wisdom, balancing compassion with self-protection.
