16.23 – The 90-Second Rule for Emotional Surges: Neuroscience shows that when a strong emotion hits, the chemical reaction in your body lasts about 90 seconds. After that, your thoughts determine whether the emotion lingers or fades. The 90-second rule teaches you to pause and breathe through that first wave instead of reacting instantly. When you feel a surge of anger, fear, or sadness, notice it without judgment and start counting slowly. Focus on your breath, the ground beneath your feet, or something steady nearby. Those 90 seconds are your window to regain control before words or actions cause regret. Once the physical wave passes, clarity returns and better choices follow. Practicing this builds emotional self-discipline—your brain learns that feelings are temporary, not commands. The next time you feel overwhelmed, remember that you only need to ride out the moment, not fight it. Mastering the 90-second rule turns emotional storms into manageable waves of awareness.
