22.38 – How to Handle “Where Are You Really From?” When someone keeps asking where you’re “really” from, they’re often trying to fit you into a box based on appearance. It can feel insulting, like being told you don’t belong. You have choices—educate them politely, redirect, or simply say, “I’m from here.” The key is controlling how much energy you give the situation. You don’t owe endless explanations for existing. Each boundary you set protects your dignity. Sometimes these questions come from curiosity, but impact matters more than intent. By naming the discomfort honestly, you help others reflect on their assumptions. Over time, awareness spreads. You deserve to belong without interrogation—your story starts where you stand, not where others think you should have.
