30.29 – What Not to Say to Someone in Crisis: When someone is in crisis, words can either calm or cut. Avoid phrases like “others have it worse” or “just get over it” — they minimize pain instead of soothing it. Focus on presence, not perfection. Say, “I’m here,” “You’re not alone,” or “Tell me what you need right now.” Listen more than you speak; silence can be the safest sound. People in deep distress need validation before advice. Don’t promise secrecy if their life is at risk, but do promise care. It’s okay not to have answers — empathy matters more than solutions. The right words aren’t magical; they’re steady. When you speak with patience and warmth, you give someone’s pain a place to rest without fear of rejection. That’s how language becomes medicine instead of misunderstanding.
