17.03 – Talking to the School Counselor When You’re Scared: Talking to a counselor can feel intimidating, especially when you fear being judged or misunderstood. But counselors exist to listen without punishment—they are trained to translate emotions into solutions. You can start with small statements like “I’ve been feeling off lately” or “I’m not sure what to do.” You don’t need to have perfect words; honesty matters more than order. A good counselor helps you find patterns in your stress so you can make realistic changes. If one conversation doesn’t go well, you can ask for another or bring a teacher to support you. Counselors can connect you with extra resources, mental health passes, or peer programs to lighten your load. Each meeting is a step toward taking your emotions seriously. When you reach out, you’re proving you deserve help—and that’s one of the bravest things a student can do.
