35.5 – When Your Parent Can’t Take Care of You: When a parent can’t care for you, it can feel like something inside you failed, even though it’s not your fault. Maybe they’re sick, struggling, or lost in their own pain. You might try to take care of them, hoping they’ll notice and change, but that burden is too heavy for a child to carry. You deserve safety and love without earning it. Grief can come from losing the parent you wished you had, not just the one you knew. You can love them deeply and still protect yourself. With time, you learn that your worth isn’t tied to their choices. You can build your own version of family—one that doesn’t disappear when things get hard. Healing starts when you release the guilt that was never yours to hold.
