Lesson Overview

18.11 – When You’re the Only One Who Looks Like You: Being the only one who looks like you in a classroom or group can make you feel as if every move is magnified. You might worry about representing your entire culture or about saying the wrong thing, even though you shouldn’t have to carry that weight. Difference draws attention, but it also builds quiet strength. The goal isn’t to blend until you disappear but to honor what you bring to the room. When you share your voice confidently, you expand how others see the world. Allies may not always understand your experience, yet many want to learn. Teach through calm presence, not performance. Belonging grows when people realize your uniqueness is part of the group’s richness, not outside of it. Over time, your courage opens doors for others to stand proud, too, showing that representation isn’t isolation—it’s impact.
