22.09 – Processing Invalidation From Teachers or Peers: When someone dismisses your feelings, questions your experience, or minimizes discrimination, it can sting deeply. Being told “You’re overreacting” or “That’s not racism” creates confusion and self-doubt. Processing that invalidation means giving yourself permission to feel anger, sadness, or disbelief without guilt. Reflect on what happened and separate your truth from their misunderstanding. Seeking support from trusted friends, mentors, or counselors can help you regain confidence. Validation doesn’t always come from others; it begins with you reminding yourself that your pain is real and worthy of care. Responding calmly rather than reacting harshly can shift the dynamic, showing maturity over emotion. Over time, you learn to see such moments not as reflections of your worth but as signs of others’ limited awareness. Growth comes when you stop needing everyone’s agreement to trust your own experience.
