24.06 – Anchoring: Using the 5 Senses to Feel Safe: Anchoring is a sensory strategy that tells your nervous system, “I’m safe right now.” When fear or flashbacks hit, your brain forgets the difference between past and present. Using your five senses reminds it where you are. Start by naming colors around you, tracing objects’ textures, noticing sounds, or smelling something grounding like citrus or coffee. Each sense becomes a rope tying you back to safety. The key is curiosity, not control—observe without forcing calm. Over time, the brain links these actions with stability, shortening recovery after distress. Anchoring works best when practiced daily, not just during crisis, so your body trusts the routine. It helps you build resilience against panic, trauma triggers, or sudden anxiety. By engaging the senses intentionally, you rewrite the story from danger to presence. Feeling safe starts as a skill and becomes a reflex the more you honor what your body feels.
