30.04 – Why Some People Cut, Burn, or Hit Themselves: Many people who self-harm aren’t trying to end their lives; they’re trying to end their pain. Physical pain can momentarily silence emotional chaos, offering a brief illusion of control. The body releases chemicals that calm the brain, and for a moment, everything feels manageable. But once that fades, guilt and shame often return stronger. Understanding why these behaviors happen is not about blaming yourself; it’s about recognizing what your mind is trying to communicate. You might be expressing anger you can’t voice, sadness no one seems to see, or emptiness that feels unbearable. Once you name those emotions, you can begin finding other outlets — drawing, squeezing ice, taking a cold shower, or talking to someone who listens without judgment. The goal is not to erase pain overnight but to teach your body safer ways to cope until the storm passes.
