Lesson Overview

26.10 – Coping With Internalized Homophobia or Transphobia: Growing up in environments where negative messages about LGBTQ+ people are common can lead to self-criticism that feels hard to escape. You might catch yourself repeating harmful ideas about your own identity and feel confused about why. That’s internalized stigma—it’s what happens when society’s prejudice becomes an inner voice. Healing starts with noticing those thoughts without judgment. Replace them with kinder truths and find spaces where pride outweighs shame. Therapy, support groups, or affirming friends can help you unlearn pain that never belonged to you. Every time you choose self-acceptance, you weaken those old messages. Healing doesn’t happen overnight, but it begins the moment you decide you deserve peace. You are not broken; you’re recovering from years of misinformation. Your identity deserves celebration, not correction, and the more you practice that, the freer you become inside.
