2.37 – What Happens if You Call 911: Calling 911 during a mental crisis is for immediate safety, not punishment. The dispatcher will ask where you are and what’s happening; answer calmly if possible. Emergency responders arrive to ensure you are not in danger. They may transport you to a hospital for evaluation if risk is high. Expect medical checks and questions about your feelings or plans. Officers or paramedics might stay nearby for protection, not arrest. If you are under 18, parents or guardians are notified for consent and care. The process focuses on stabilization first, treatment later. Staying cooperative helps things move smoothly. You can request privacy and clarity about each step. After the crisis, follow-up plans include therapy or counseling referrals. Though the experience feels intense, it proves that help systems exist for emergencies. Using 911 responsibly can save your life or someone else’s. Safety is always the correct decision, even if fear says otherwise.
