27.15 – When People Say the Wrong Thing While Trying to Help: After a loss, well-meaning people often speak before they think, offering clichés like “everything happens for a reason.” Their intent is comfort, but their words can sting. It’s okay to feel frustrated when someone minimizes your pain or rushes your process. Most people fear silence, so they fill it with phrases they’ve heard before. Remember that clumsy kindness still comes from care, not harm. You can gently redirect by saying what actually helps—“Just listening is enough.” Setting boundaries teaches others how to support you without causing additional hurt. Over time you’ll recognize which voices bring calm and which bring pressure. Forgiveness here isn’t approval—it’s release from extra tension. Responding with grace preserves your energy for healing rather than conflict. Grief education starts small: by showing others how compassion sounds, you turn awkward moments into chances for genuine understanding.
