Lesson Overview

31.12 – Your Parent Went to Jail: Now What?: Having a parent in jail can feel like your world suddenly split in two—love and anger battling for space inside you. You might feel embarrassed, lonely, or scared of what people will say. But their mistake doesn’t define your identity or your potential. Staying connected through letters, phone calls, or supervised visits helps both of you heal separately and together. Teachers, counselors, and mentors can assist with forms, therapy referrals, and emotional grounding when things feel unstable. Avoid carrying guilt for choices that weren’t yours; you are allowed to keep living your life fully. Building your own goals and routines brings balance to unpredictable weeks. Peer groups for families affected by incarceration remind you that others understand. Healing means accepting mixed emotions without shame. You can honor love, learn from pain, and still grow strong enough to change your family’s future.
