30.13 – Can I Be Honest With My Therapist About These Thoughts?: Many people fear that telling a therapist about suicidal thoughts will lead to being hospitalized or judged. In reality, therapists hear these thoughts often and are trained to handle them with care. Their job isn’t to punish you but to keep you alive and supported. Being honest helps them understand your risk level and what kind of help fits best. You can say, “Sometimes I have thoughts of not wanting to live, but I don’t have a plan,” or “I’m afraid of what I might do.” Clear words help them protect you appropriately. Most of the time, honesty leads to deeper trust, not loss of control. Remember, therapy works best when it’s real. If you hide your pain, your therapist can’t guide you through it. Speaking the truth is the first real act of self-protection you can take.
