32.17 – Knowing Your Rights at School and in Public: Understanding your rights is one of the most powerful tools you can carry. At school, you have rights to privacy, freedom of expression within limits, and fair treatment under policy. In public, you have the right to remain silent, the right to ask if you’re free to leave, and the right to respectful treatment by authorities. But knowing these rights means little if you can’t stay calm enough to use them. Fear and anger can cloud judgment; preparation brings protection. Write down key phrases you can remember when under stress. If stopped or questioned, stay polite but assertive—those few seconds of composure can change everything. When you know what’s allowed and what isn’t, you shift from being vulnerable to being informed. Knowledge isn’t rebellion; it’s armor built from awareness.
