30.01 – What to Do When You Feel Like Hurting Yourself: When the urge to hurt yourself shows up, it can feel like a wave that takes over everything. Your heart races, your body feels tense, and your thoughts become heavy. The first thing to remember is that urges pass — they rise, peak, and fade, even if it doesn’t feel like it. Ground yourself by focusing on your breath, naming five things you see, four you can touch, three you can hear, two you can smell, and one you can taste. This technique helps your brain return to the present moment instead of spiraling in panic. Move your body, change your environment, or hold something cold to reconnect with your senses. The pain you feel is real, but so is your ability to survive it. You don’t need to face it alone — reaching out to someone safe helps break the cycle. Every small action toward safety counts. You are not weak for needing help; you are human for feeling deeply.
