Lesson Overview

9.12 – When You’re Startled by Loud Sounds or Sudden Movements: If you flinch when doors slam or voices rise, it doesn’t mean you’re weak—it means your body remembers. Startle responses are automatic survival reflexes that once protected you. Over time, they can become overactive, keeping you on edge. Understanding that your body isn’t betraying you but trying to keep you safe changes frustration into compassion. The path forward includes gradually exposing yourself to mild surprises while grounding your senses. Deep breaths, muscle relaxation, or focusing on one calm object help your brain stay present. Explaining to friends or teachers why you react this way can also reduce misunderstanding. As your nervous system relearns calmness, startles lessen and recovery speeds up. Each gentle moment of self-care rewires your body toward peace, proving safety can coexist with alertness.
