6.01 – When Home Feels Unsafe: Coping with Chaos: Feeling unsafe at home can make every day feel like walking on glass. Your mind may stay alert even when nothing is happening because it expects the next outburst. Chaos can look like shouting, broken trust, or unpredictable moods that leave you drained. One of the first things to remember is that your safety and peace of mind matter as much as anyone else’s. Learning to spot the signs before situations explode gives you power to act instead of freeze. Sometimes that means stepping away quietly, creating small routines that calm your body, or finding one supportive adult who listens without judgment. Writing or breathing through fear gives your nervous system a break it desperately needs. You can also practice visualizing a calm, steady place that no one can disturb. Even when home feels like a storm, your choices and reactions can be anchors. Safety planning—like having emergency contacts or knowing exits—doesn’t make you weak; it shows wisdom. Over time, small protective actions help you build strength and hope until bigger change becomes possible.
