27.17 – Grieving Someone You Had a Complicated Relationship With: Grief becomes confusing when love and hurt lived side by side. You might mourn what was good while still remembering pain that was never resolved. It’s okay to feel both sorrow and relief at once; conflicting emotions can share the same heart. People may expect simple sadness, but your truth might be mixed with anger, regret, or guilt. Honoring all those feelings without judgment leads to deeper healing. Try writing what you wish had been different—it releases trapped emotions. Complicated grief asks for honesty, not perfection. You can appreciate their humanity without excusing their harm. Forgiveness here means freeing yourself, not rewriting history. Over time the intensity fades, leaving understanding instead of turmoil. Complex love still counts as love, and mourning it fully helps you reclaim peace. Healing begins when you accept that closure can exist even without resolution.
