8.19 – When You’re Not Sure If You’re Allowed to Grieve: Sometimes you feel pain for someone society says you shouldn’t mourn—a distant relative, an ex, a celebrity, or someone others disliked. That’s called disenfranchised grief, and it’s still real. You don’t need permission to hurt. Grief belongs to anyone who loved, cared, or was impacted. When others minimize your sadness, it can make you question yourself, but emotions don’t need approval. Allow yourself to cry or remember quietly, even if no one else understands. Your connection to that person or situation is valid because it shaped your life. Finding small personal rituals, like writing or lighting a candle, can help you honor that private loss. Healing begins when you accept your feelings without shame. Every emotion you acknowledge builds honesty and courage—and that’s how you reclaim the right to grieve fully.
