22.04 – Microaggressions and Why They Hurt: Microaggressions are small comments or actions that might seem harmless but carry hidden messages that devalue who you are. They can sound like compliments but feel like cuts, reminding you that others see you as different or less than. Hearing “You speak so well” or “Where are you really from?” may seem casual, yet over time, those words build frustration, self-doubt, and fatigue. Each moment can trigger memories of being misunderstood or overlooked. Recognizing microaggressions helps you name what’s happening instead of questioning your reactions. Setting boundaries, responding calmly, or seeking allies can make a difference. It’s not your job to educate everyone, but you do have the right to protect your peace. Understanding why these moments hurt creates awareness for others and self-respect for you. Change begins when people stop dismissing small harms and start listening to their real impact.
