23.01 – What Does It Mean to Advocate for Yourself?: Advocating for yourself means learning to use your voice with purpose, courage, and respect so that your needs are understood and valued. It’s about realizing that your feelings and experiences matter just as much as anyone else’s. When you speak up, you are not being difficult—you are being clear about what helps you succeed. Advocacy begins with knowing what you need and why it matters, whether that’s extra time on an assignment, space to calm down, or clarity from a teacher. You learn to express those needs without anger or apology, balancing confidence with empathy. Over time, this builds self-trust, because you stop waiting for others to read your mind. You discover that people respond better when you communicate calmly and directly. Self-advocacy becomes a daily act of self-respect, showing you believe in your worth while still listening to others with an open heart.
