Lesson Overview

24.09 – When Sitting Still Feels Like a Threat: For some, stillness triggers discomfort because it mirrors moments when they once felt unsafe. The body stores memories, and silence can reopen them. If sitting still feels threatening, know that your reaction is valid and common. Start with movement-based mindfulness—stretching, walking, or rocking gently—to show your body that calm doesn’t require freezing. Pair movement with slow breathing to rebuild trust in stillness over time. You can also meditate with eyes open, focusing on a stable object, which keeps awareness grounded in the present. Gradual exposure teaches your nervous system safety through experience. The goal isn’t forcing yourself to be still but expanding your comfort zone gently. Over weeks, stillness transforms from exposure to empowerment. You reclaim peace at your own pace. Healing happens not by silencing the body but by listening to what it’s protecting and reminding it that rest is no longer dangerous.
