17.19 – When Safety Drills Feel Like Real Trauma: Lockdowns, alarms, and evacuation drills can re-trigger past trauma because your body doesn’t know it’s practice. Prepare mentally by grounding before and after. Let staff know if drills activate panic so you can step outside briefly or wear ear protection. Remind yourself that safety planning, not danger, is the goal. Afterward, do something regulating—stretch, hydrate, or talk to a peer. If flashbacks persist, tell a counselor so desensitization strategies can help. Your sensitivity is not weakness; it’s your nervous system’s loyalty to survival. With support, drills become learning moments instead of emotional ambushes. Awareness and preparation turn fear into informed resilience.
