Lesson Overview

35.2 – Losing a Parent to Death, Jail, or Distance: Losing a parent isn’t always about death—sometimes they’re alive but still gone. Whether through prison walls, addiction, or emotional distance, that loss leaves a quiet ache that never feels fully seen. You might miss their voice, their care, or the idea of what family was supposed to be. It’s okay to love them and still feel angry. You can mourn what you didn’t get while learning to build love elsewhere. Others might say “you’ll get over it,” but you don’t get over missing a parent—you grow around it. Your life starts to form new supports—teachers, mentors, friends—who remind you that family can also be chosen. Over time, you realize that missing them doesn’t make you weak. It makes you human, learning to live with a space that will always hold their name.
