18.01 – Why You Want to Belong (And Why It Hurts): The desire to belong is one of the deepest parts of being human, shaped by the need to feel accepted and safe within a group. When others include you, it signals that you matter, and your brain releases chemicals that make you feel calm and connected. But when you are left out, the pain is real because rejection activates the same brain regions as physical hurt. That’s why being ignored or excluded can feel so sharp—it touches your sense of worth. Belonging also helps define your identity by showing you how your values fit into a shared space. Yet, true belonging never means shrinking yourself to be liked. It’s about being valued for who you genuinely are, not for what you perform. When you chase approval at the cost of your truth, connection starts to fade. Real belonging grows when people see the whole you and still choose to stand beside you, even when it’s not convenient.
