Lesson Overview

9.33 – Vicarious Trauma: Hurt by What Happens to Others: Caring deeply can make other people’s pain feel like your own. When you constantly witness distress—through friends, news, or work—you absorb secondhand trauma. This emotional exhaustion can blur boundaries between empathy and overload. Recognize signs like irritability, numbness, or fatigue as cues for rest, not weakness. Protect your compassion with limits: step back when needed, balance heavy stories with uplifting ones, and practice grounding. Helping others doesn’t mean losing yourself. By caring sustainably, you model healthy empathy. Replenish through quiet moments, laughter, or creative outlets. Each boundary you set keeps your heart strong and your mind clear. Compassion works best when it’s renewable, not drained. Healing others begins with remembering that your peace is part of the medicine.
