Lesson Overview

8.36 – What to Say to Someone Who Is Grieving: Supporting someone in grief means showing up, not fixing it. Simple words like “I’m here,” “That sounds hard,” or “Tell me about them” matter more than advice. Avoid clichés that minimize pain. Listen with patience and silence; it’s okay not to have answers. Offer small acts of care—food, company, or help with chores. Grieving people often feel invisible; your presence can remind them they’re not alone. Every conversation is an opportunity to create safety. You can’t take away pain, but you can make it bearable. Compassion grows when you learn to sit beside sorrow without trying to erase it.
