Lesson Overview

2.39 – Supporting a Friend in Crisis Without Losing Yourself: Helping a friend in crisis requires compassion and boundaries. Listen more than you speak; presence is power. Avoid promising to keep secrets about danger—safety outweighs loyalty. Encourage professional help instead of trying to fix everything yourself. Take breaks to care for your own mind; burnout helps no one. Learn crisis resources so you can share accurate guidance. Stay calm even when they panic—your steadiness models safety. Never absorb their pain as your own responsibility. Use “I” statements like “I care about you and I’m worried.” Include adults or counselors if risk grows. Friendship does not mean constant rescue; it means steady support. Protecting yourself keeps you able to help longer. Know that sometimes saving someone means guiding them toward professionals. Real empathy includes self-preservation. Love and limits can coexist without guilt.
