Lesson Overview

32.1 – What Systemic Racism Feels Like in School: Systemic racism in school isn’t always loud or obvious—it often hides behind rules, assumptions, and expectations that treat some students as less capable before they even speak. It feels like always having to prove yourself twice as hard just to be seen as equal, or being disciplined for something others get warned about. It’s when your ideas get ignored until someone else repeats them, or when teachers assume you’re “trouble” because of how you look, speak, or where you come from. It builds pressure that never turns off, making you question your worth even when you’re doing everything right. Over time, that pressure can drain motivation and confidence, causing grades or participation to slip. But understanding that this bias is not your fault is powerful—it helps you stop internalizing what isn’t true. Speaking your truth, finding allies, and supporting others who face the same struggle are ways to reclaim your peace. Each time you recognize unfair treatment, you’re already taking back control from a system that tries to silence you.
