Lesson Overview

31.03 – When Gunshots Outside Keep You Awake at Night: Hearing gunshots near home can shake your sense of security and make rest feel impossible. The body stays alert long after the danger has passed because fear teaches it to survive. You might count every sound, freeze at sudden pops, or imagine worst-case scenarios before sleeping. These reactions are normal responses to ongoing stress, not signs of weakness. Building safety again starts with controlling what you can—locking doors, talking with neighbors, and grounding yourself in routine. Listening to calm music or guided breathing before bed helps the brain release constant vigilance. Sharing how the noise affects you with a counselor or trusted adult can relieve isolation. Each night of interrupted sleep is your mind asking for reassurance, not failure. Over time, consistency and community restore peace where fear once lived. Healing means believing that nights can feel quiet again.
