30.25 – What Happens If You Tell a School Counselor: School counselors are trained to listen, protect, and connect students with resources. When you share suicidal thoughts or self-harm urges, their first priority is your safety, not punishment. They may contact your parents or a mental-health professional if risk is high, but that action means you matter enough to save. Conversations remain private beyond safety limits — they won’t share your story with classmates or teachers. You can expect calm questions about what’s happening and what support you need next. They may help you create a plan, call a hotline together, or find therapy options. You’re not “in trouble” for feeling pain; you’re being cared for through it. Telling a counselor isn’t losing control — it’s gaining an ally who will fight for your safety when you feel too tired to fight alone.
