Lesson Overview

9.23 – Coping With Nightmares or Flashbacks: Nightmares and flashbacks make it feel like trauma never ended. They can strike without warning, pulling you back into fear that isn’t happening anymore. Remind yourself aloud: “I’m safe now; this is a memory, not a moment.” Keep grounding tools near—something you can touch, a scent, or calming words. Regulating your sleep schedule, limiting screens before bed, and practicing deep breathing help reduce triggers. Talking through these episodes helps your brain process unfinished fear instead of reliving it. After each one, treat yourself gently, like recovering from an emotional storm. Over time, your brain learns it doesn’t need to replay pain to keep you safe. Every restful night that follows proves progress. Healing doesn’t erase memories—it teaches them their place in the past, not the present.
