17.13 – When You’re Too Anxious to Walk Into Class: Sometimes your body freezes at the door even when your mind says “go.” That’s not laziness—it’s your nervous system reacting to fear. Ground yourself first with slow breaths and sensory focus: notice five colors, four textures, three sounds. Ask a friend or staff member to walk with you for reassurance. You can plan gradual exposure—standing in the hall, then at the door, then sitting for short times. Celebrate each step instead of judging the delay. Anxiety loses grip when predictability increases. Communicate your triggers with teachers so they can offer gentle transitions. With repetition, your brain learns that the classroom isn’t danger—it’s just discomfort that passes. Progress isn’t measured by speed but by courage to try again.
