21.08 – How Trauma Lives in the Body Trauma doesn’t just stay in your memories; it settles into your nervous system and muscles. When something overwhelming happens, your body stores sensations of fear, helplessness, or shock even after your mind tries to move on. This can cause tension, flashbacks, or exhaustion long after the event. Healing means helping your body feel safe again through calm breathing, grounding, and gentle movement. The body must learn the difference between danger and safety so it can finally relax. Therapy and trauma-informed care rebuild that trust slowly, layer by layer. As your body learns to release old patterns, energy returns to areas once frozen in fear. Understanding trauma’s physical impact helps you replace shame with compassion. You begin to see that survival responses were protection—not weakness—and that healing is a full-body experience.
