27.07 – What to Do When You Feel Numb Instead of Sad: Numbness is one of grief’s strangest companions—it’s the brain’s way of shielding you when pain feels too large to handle. You might worry that not crying means you don’t care, but emotional shutdown is a form of survival. The absence of feeling is still a sign of deep emotion; your heart just needs time to catch up. Some days you’ll go through motions like a robot, watching the world move while you stand still. This state isn’t permanent—it’s a pause, not a failure. Gentle movement, journaling, or even sitting quietly in nature can start to thaw what’s frozen inside. Try not to judge your response; every person’s path through grief looks different. When numbness fades, it may be replaced by tears or anger, both signs of healing. Feeling nothing doesn’t mean you’ve lost connection—it means your mind is taking care of you until it’s ready to feel again.
